Sacrament of Baptism
In Baptism we use a number of symbols that signify what the sacrament of Baptism means in our life.
Water
Water signifies life. Without water we die. Water in Baptism teaches us that Baptism is all about receiving life – the sharing in the life of Christ. The waters of Baptism wash away Original Sin and make us a New Creation in Christ.
The White Garment
The white garment also signifies life. In the early church the first to be baptized were the adults. One would go down into the water signifying the dying to one life and rising back up signifying rising to a new life. A white garment was placed on the person signifying that he/she had received new life – the life of Christian in Baptism.
Chrism
Chrism is a perfumed olive oil consecrated by the bishop during Holy Week.
The use of oil is to signify one has been called to a special vocation. This goes back to the Old Testament and continues to the present day, for example the Priest is anointed on the day of his ordination to signify his special calling (vocation).
Candle
The Light of Christ is passed on to us in the form of a lighted candle, which was lit from the Paschal Candle that was blessed at the Easter Vigil. We are called to be the light of Christ in the world and we are asked to keep that light burning brightly. The parents, godparents and extended family are to nurture this light (life) in the child by their example of Christian living.
The Paschal Candle is used only in Baptism and Funerals. We Christians believe that both baptism and funerals are the beginning of life. That is why we also use water and the white cloth at funerals as we do at baptism as they signify new life.
Baptisms are scheduled on Saturday’s at 10:30 a.m. According to the schedule of the Church.
